So, I was at the Petco in Dublin with the ABR folks, as I have been for the past few weekends. The dogs that were there were Rhonda's dog Red, Bill's dog Casey, and a foster dog of Rhonda's, 14-year-old Stella.

While we were there, a half-Brittany, half-setter mutt puppy came back to us: one of the Petco guys had adopted him, but apparently the puppy was stressing out his cat unduly and so it didn't work out. The puppy (Brett) was an exceedingly cute, exceedingly wiggly, but smart and quite well-behaving five-month-old puppy, who now needs a home again.

Well, you can see where this is going. Rhonda asked me if I wanted the puppy, and while I said I couldn't yet, as I am still at Apple for another few weeks, I think I'd love to have that puppy afterwards. Rhonda said she'd try to find another foster for Stella so she could take the puppy back for me. I then, on impulse, pointed out that perhaps I could take care of Stella for a few weeks, since working a full-time job isn't really a problem when dealing with a fourteen-year-old dog, especially if she can hang in the yard while we're out. So now I have Stella at my house!

Of course, this was not a well-thought-out plan on my part: I was supposed to stay at Paul's with Rob and Amber on Saturday night, and run the Wharf-to-Wharf in Santa Cruz the next day. Oops. I got Carol to feed the dog in the morning, though, and I fed and walked the dog before I left, and Stella still seems to be alive and well now, so I guess it was all good. I left her water, a bone, and her bed. That seems to have entertained her.

Anyway, I went to Paul's on Saturday night, we ate dinner, and then Paul, Rob, Amber, and I went to a place in downtown Willow Glen that Paul had told us about: Beavers. It's a bar and grill, and apparently, it used to be called "The Glen" or something. Willow Glen city council or whoever told them to change their name, and there was a big fight about it, and so in a fit of spite, the owners renamed it "Beavers!" It looks the same, and is just a normal bar and grill, but the motto is "Best Spread in Town." Ha! I think it's hysterical that they named a place out of spite. The menus say something like, "we listened to you, Willow Glen!" So we had to check out this place that was named out of spite...we had a drink, played some pool badly, then decided that it was actually a pretty sad scene and we had to get up early anyway.

Sunday morning: 6:30 am. We wake up to go to Santa Cruz for the race, and barely get to the start line in time for the start at 8:30! Slow-walking idiots slowed us up so that we didn't actually pass the start until maybe four minutes after the gun. We quickly lost each other, but I had a good time and kept my usual pace and ran the entire 6 miles (personal best distance!). Then we waited around for each other, got back, had lunch, and I went home.

Stella seemed ok when I got back...maybe a bit thirsty, so I gave her some more water. Then I had to give her a bath. That was quite easy, actually. What a good dog. Now I'm chilling with Stella on the patio, waiting for her to dry before I let her in the house. I don't really want wet dog in my house yet.

Wait! Does this basically mean you will have acquired a dog in short order? Because, congratulations!

Yay for imminent puppiness!

Also, I used to live a few blocks from "The Glen" and the Beavers story amuses me greatly.

Off-topicish, it reminds me of a Sports Illustrated article about David Lander (Squiggy from "Laverne and Shirley") who, as owner of the AAA Portland Beavers, promoted the team with the slogan "Beaver Fever - Snatch It!"
