While I was driving back from a doctor's appointment today, I saw a person standing on the median of a six or seven-lane divided street, seemingly about to cross. Now, logic dictates that if one is jaywalking across a very busy, wide street, that one should probably wait until the cars stop coming before crossing. I was in the leftmost lane, so I was closest to the person. She looked right at me as I approached at ~40 mph, and walked right in front of me. I had to brake hard not to hit her.

However, she proceeded to cross in front of all lanes of oncoming traffic. The person in the lane next to me really didn't see her coming, and had to brake so hard that there was melted rubber, squealing, etc. I had stayed slowed down to make sure that no accidents were about to happen, or if one did, that I would be able to be a good witness, as any accident would certainly have been the fault of crazy jaywalker and someone should be around to say so. None did, though, through the good braking of my fellow vehicle to the right.

Crazy jaywalker just kept right on going. I don't know what she was thinking. Did she know how close she came to death? Why would you just walk right into oncoming traffic? If dude-to-the-right had hit her, would he have been at fault? Poor dude-to-the-right...he must've been scared witless.

Some people have been known to attempt suicide by stepping in front of speeding traffic/trains. Although it doesn't sound like the case here. I'm more inclined to think "too stupid to be alive" in this case.

This may be the sort of obvious stereotype, but you know, perhaps there was some intoxicating substance involved? Just sayin'.
